popStar! Camp

July 15th - 19th and 22nd - 26th

Get ready to hit the stage.

About

Write. Record. Perform. Become a Pop Star.

Welcome to PopStar Camp, where young musicians step into the spotlight and experience what it’s like to be a real artist—writing songs, mastering their instruments, recording in a studio, and performing live.

At The Ottawa Conservatory’s PopStar Camp, campers will explore the art of modern songwriting and performance, inspired by today’s biggest stars—whether it’s the lyrical storytelling of Taylor Swift and Joni Mitchell, the high-energy stage presence of Dua Lipa and Sabrina Carpenter, or the electrifying rock and roll energy of AC/DC, The Strokes, and The Beatles.

This immersive two-week experience blends musicianship, performance, and creative collaboration, helping campers develop original songs from concept to concert while working with expert instructors.

Age Groups

Campers will be grouped by age to ensure an engaging and age-appropriate learning experience

6-8: Mini PopStars

An exciting introduction to group singing, rhythm, and stage confidence. Campers will learn to sing and move like a true pop star while preparing a group vocal performance for the final showcase.

9-12: Rising PopStars

A hands-on journey through instrumental skills, songwriting fundamentals, and live performance. Campers will rotate between instruments, experiment with pop song structures, and work together to compose and rehearse original music while developing their onstage confidence.

13-17: Star Performers

A deep dive into song composition, music production, and stage presence. Campers will refine their instrumental technique, analyze the hit-making secrets of popular songs, and work collaboratively to create and arrange original music, preparing for studio recording and a live performance showcase.

Campers will be placed in bands or vocal groups and assigned an instructor to guide them through the creative process.

Goal-oriented group lessons will focus on instrumental skills, vocal techniques, and stage performance, helping campers reach specific milestones in their musical development.

Through the analysis of chart-topping hits, campers will explore:

  • Pop song structure and form—understanding how to craft catchy verses, unforgettable choruses, and dynamic bridges.

  • Melody, harmony, and chord progressions—how different harmonic choices create distinct moods.

  • Lyricism and storytelling—writing lyrics that connect with an audience on an emotional level.

  • Stage presence and movement—how top artists captivate a crowd.
